Cultivation / The Eight Doors

What are you training?

Meditation is a broad label. The Eight Doors name materially different operations, capacities, and evidence limits.

Cultivation / Bhāvanā

Name the operation before promising the state.

Cultivation is repeated tending: a practice whose operation can be described, whose capacity can be examined, and whose limits remain visible.

The Eight Doors are a map, not a ladder. No Door is a cure, a diagnosis, a spiritual rank, an energy mechanism, or a guaranteed route to a particular state.

The practice map

Eight doors. Eight materially different operations.

Each entry names what a person does, what that may tend, and the evidence limit that keeps the claim honest.

  1. 01

    Focused attention

Operation: Choose one neutral object, notice drift, disengage, and return.

Capacity: Sustaining attention and redirecting it deliberately.

Evidence: Supported. Effect size, durability, and everyday transfer remain bounded questions.

  2. 02

    Open monitoring

Operation: Notice changing experience without selecting or immediately following one event.

Capacity: Broad monitoring with less automatic capture.

Evidence: Supported. The evidence base is thinner than for focused attention.

  3. 03

    Compassion

Operation: Generate goodwill or care and widen its intended recipient.

Capacity: Prosocial orientation and compassionate perspective.

Evidence: Supported. Intensive-practice findings do not predict brief ordinary use.

  4. 04

    Mantra

Operation: Repeat a sound or phrase as the selected activity of attention.

Capacity: Rhythmic attentional occupation and return.

Evidence: Evidence exists, while methods, controls, and conflicts of interest limit confidence.

  5. 05

    Body scan

Operation: Move attention systematically through bodily sensation and internal state.

Capacity: Interoceptive engagement and discrimination of reported sensation.

Evidence: Supported for engagement. Improved interoceptive accuracy remains mixed and contested.

  6. 06

    Visualization

Operation: Construct, hold, and update a deliberate mental image.

Capacity: Imagery control, visual working memory, and rehearsal.

Evidence: Supported. Samples are often narrow and effects may be transient.

  7. 07

    Resting as awareness

Operation: Rest without selecting an object and relax the usual subject-object structure.

Capacity: The proposed capacity remains difficult to operationalize consistently.

Evidence: Speculative and understudied. No exercise is offered here.

  8. 08

    Movement cultivation

Operation: Coordinate body, attention, and breath or rhythm through ordinary movement.

Capacity: Proprioception, balance, interoceptive engagement, and attention in motion.

Evidence: Several outcomes are supported. Vital-energy mechanisms are unsupported.

The present call

Let the need choose the next useful door.

  • Clear my headDistinguish the loudest signal from the operation used to examine it.
  • Plan what is aheadConnect attention, imagery, and movement to a workable rhythm.
  • Make a decisionExpose assumptions, trade-offs, and the care each option asks for.
  • Build a systemTurn trained attention and imagery into a small, useful proof.
  • Talk or restConversation and rest remain complete choices. No practice is required.
